Property Description

Welcome to our part paradise in middle earth. Your hosts Julie and Jonathan are keen hikers and native bird enthusiasts and have extensive knowledge of the local plants, birds and walks. Jonathan was a wildlife ranger and Julie an international school teacher. We love to travel our selves, check out our blogs on our website.
Relax and unwind at our peaceful country haven. Enjoy panoramic views of the forests, glaciers and mountains of Westland National Park from your room. Sit out on your private deck or our garden and enjoy the sunsets. Our grounds are specially landscaped and planted with native trees to provide habitat to attract native birds. This year we have had bellbirds and fantails nesting here and tui and keruru frequent the garden to feed on the many flowering flaxes, fuschia and kowhai.
Ribbonwood is conveniently situated to provide panoramic views in a quiet rural setting, just minutes from busy Franz Josef village and ten minutes drive from the glacier access carpark. Our modern home and cottages feature tiled bathrooms, low allergy floors and bedding, free Wifi.
Breakfast menu includes fresh fruit compote crepes, fresh fruit salad and choice of cereals, free range egg dishes, homemade bread or toast, fruit juice, perked coffee and tea.
Several restaurants in Franz Josef village offer a complimentary pick up and drop off service
At Ribbonwood we pride ourselves on our friendly personalised advice, catering for just a few guests because we want you to feel completely at home. Enquire now about our discounts and special offers. Ribbonwood is smoke free and has a no-shoes inside policy to protect our cork tiled floors.

"Julie was away when we stayed (March 2010) but Jonathan was an excellent host and cooked a lovely breakfast. He is an interesting guy and advised us on our glacier walk, which we started from the town only 10-15 mins away. Amazing day! In the B&B, we stayed in the self contained accommodation, which was perfect - clean, well furnished and attractive, with patio doors to decking and the garden. I highly recomend this place."

Bob & Jeanne, London, 03/05/2010

"We had a wonderful overnight stay in a welcoming & comfortable home. Our hosts gave us much help and advice including booking local restaurants and attractions. Ribbonwood is an elegant home just outside Franz-Joseph in a scenic position. We enjoyed the home-made breakfast goodies and the engaging conversations on local life & wildlife. We wanted to stay longer."

brian & Linda, 08/04/2008

"What a wonderful retreat, the silence, the views, and the hospitality. Thank you. You make great breakfast Jo. A good base to see the glaciers and we enjoyed a helicopter flight the morning we moved on."

Vivienne G Blount, 30/01/2008

"Ribbonwood Retreat had to be the best accommodation we experienced in New Zealand. The self contained cottage was delightful with absolutely everything one could need. Modern, comfortable, just gorgeous. And the view of the glacier is perfect. Jo was friendly, with nothing too much trouble. Helpful and knowlegable without being intrusive. Strongly recommended!"

"We stayed in the cottage, a beautifully built king size room with a kitchen and wonderful bath. The accomodation was lovely as was the host and hostess. Jo and Julie were the perfert Kiwi hosts helping us plan our activities with the warmth of family caring. Stunning views surrounding the cottage and home with horses and cows in the surrounding pastures. A wonderful stay! Caroline and Gordon Getz"

"Jo and Julie have been superb hosts adding their personal touch to the lovely luxury accomodation here. Wonderful to wake up to superb views in the morning, and lovely breakfast too (the home made bread is a must!)"

Catherine Buck, 22/12/2005

"We stayed in the Ribbonwood cottage for two nights, and throughly enjoyed the experience. The accommodation was excellent, with probably the best shower on the south island! The setting and scenery were magnificent, and Jo and Julie were great hosts with superb local knowledge, both of tourist attractions and environmental issues. And then there's the home made bread...!"
