Photos of Ranui Retreat Bed and Breakfast/Homestay
Welcome to Ranui Retreat. We are close to historic Oamaru and the main highway to Dunedin. Views of Otago rural landscape stretching to the Kakanui Mountains enhance the rural sense of this five acre property of mature oak, elm and ash trees. There is birdsong aplenty. Character rooms include rich, handmade quilts which add to the relaxed ambience. Join the family for the evening or you may like to retire to other spaces with music and a good book from our library selection.

"Have stayed at Ranui Retreat many times. Five nights this year. Always such a warm welcome from Sheryl and Ken, who are a lot of fun as well as Sheryl being a superb cook. So being able to have an evening meal, by prior arrangement, is a bonus. Lovely comfy bed. A quiet out-of-town location with a lovely garden, yet Oamaru is very accessible. Wouldn't stay anywhere else!"
"We stay at Ranui Retreat each time we come to NZ, which is usually once a year and for 4 or 5 nights. We love Ranui Retreat - the lovely warm welcome from Ken and Sheryl, , the fun and banter, fabulous food (poached fruit at breakfast is perhaps my favourite), restful garden and all in a great location near enough to Oamaru but out in the country. We have the downstairs ensuite room with Sheryl's wonderful patchwork quilt. The whole house is quirky in a good way. You do need a car or other transport. Plenty of trout fishing opportunities nearby if that's your sport. If you are very sensitive to traffic noise State Highway 1 may be a bit close. But for us, having noted it when we first arrive, it quickly ceases to intrude."
"Can a second visit ever live up to the promise and excitement of the first? It can. It DID! The accommodations at Ranui Retreat are every bit as lovely as we remembered and our hosts Sheryl and Ken as generous and friendly as well. The surprise this time was joining them for a potluck supper with some of their friends and being incorporated into a true New Zealand at-home experience, lending a hand in the kitchen and feeling that we had become friends as well as guests. It says far more about the friendliness and openness of our hosts than that we ourselves are so special. Again, enjoy a unique experience and treat yourself to a few nights at Ranui Retreat with the Laramans."
"Be prepared for a gorgeous experience. Sheryl and Ken are artists, and their work adorns their house and gardens. Ken's mosaics are visible on the bathroom tiled floor and garden paths. Sheryl's amazing fabric art is exquisite, from the comforter cover on the bed to wall decorations, lampshades, and pillows in the living room. Breakfast was delicious, with homemade preserves as well as homemade bread and yogurt. Ken's advice proved invaluable in our visit to Dunedin, as he recommended a very special second--hand bookstore near the university and a wonderful restaurant by the harbor. Our only regret is that we only stayed one night with them. Their house is about 7 km south of Oamaru, a manageable distance and one of the loveliest homestays we have visited."
"We come to New Zealand every year and we often stay at B&Bs as we travel around your country. Ranui Retreat is a special place. It's located in a lovely and quiet spot close to Oamaru's restaurants and historic sites. Sheryl and Ken are welcoming and interesting hosts. Their home is eclectic and comfortable reflecting their love of art. They are both artists........ We spent an enjoyable time with them. Our room was private and pretty and the breakfast delicious. We'll recommend Ranui Retreat to our friends and other B&B operators....... Karen and Nick Schmit USA"
