"Thank you very much for everything Ruth! The muffins were amazing and Sumba (dog) was a great addition to the house, we feel very welcome. J&J Wellington NZ"

"This b&b is as welcoming as the photos. We were taken care of as if we were family members. Our stay was most enjoyable and we hope to come back. Extremely good value for you money. VO (Feb 2017)"

Ruth Buss, 19/04/2017

"Great stay. Ruth and Jerry have many years of experience with B&B. Perfect hosts. Everything was fine. Nice bedroom, own very nice bathroom and a perfect breakfast served in the morning. Everything was very clean and lovely. We highly recommend staying here. Erich, Germany (Jan 2017)"

Ruth Buss, 19/04/2017

"'The guest room is spacious, with a comfy bed, a nice sofa, good closet space, and wonderful extra touches such as flowers and robes. The non-shared bathroom a few steps down the hall is modern and spotlessly clean (like everything else.) Ruth and Jerry are wonderful hosts, and their dog Sumba is friendly and well-behaved. Their home is in a quiet residential neighborhood, but close to town amenities. The hosts offer their bikes, and we can recommend the short ride out to the beach at Wainui. Breakfasts on the porch were wonderful: fresh fruit and juice, yogurt, french press coffee or tea, muesli and other cereals, tasty toasts and jams, and the special treat of fresh baked scones or muffins or the like. Ruth also offered us a yummy shortbread for tea time when we arrived. Would definitely recommend! ' Viviana and Steve ."

"My wife and I were fortunate to find a home away from home--we live in the Washington DC area of the States--during our visit to New Zealand in August, 2014. Recommended by friends in Auckland, we knew we would have only a weekend in Napier, a city about which we had heard a good deal, but knew little. As part of our visit of must-see places on the North Island, we knew we wanted to visit this historic city, the epitome of all that is art deco; and we knew, as well, that time constraints would permit only a brief encounter with the high points and architecture of the city. We therefore wanted to stay with people who really knew the city; and, in traveling, we find that B&B proprietors fit that bill. We were not disappointed when we stayed with Ruth and Jerry at the Green House on the Hill. In addition to their knowledge of Napier and the surrounding area, we were very pleased with our accommodations. The bedroom was toasty warm, the time of year being winter for us; and the bed was very comfy. We had access to a pleasant living room area in the house and had a private bath, as well. The breakfast was not only tasty, but healthy, with lots of fruit and grains provided. The location of the Green House on the top of a hill provided excellent views and exercise. My wife and I highly recommend this B&B to one and all, whether on business or on vacation! Rick, Washington DC"

Ruth Buss, 06/04/2015

"We enjoyed our stay at The Green House on the Hill. The continental breakfast had an assortment of cereals, jams & spreads, bread, plus fruit salad, yoghurt, tea, coffee. The home baked muffins were absolutely delicious! The accommodation was pleasant & clean. Beds were comfy, shower & toilets were sparkling clean. The were facilities for laundry which we were welcome to use but did not. Ruth was a good source of things to do and places to visit. She was friendly and accommodating. The place has free wifi, Sky TV, AC/ heat pump, parking, sea views from the deck and is only a short distance to the city centre (a few minutes walk). It is a steep walk up the hill but was not an issue for us. Stayed with my husband, 2 kids & mum . Would highly recommend. Stayed January 2015 (4evrtravlin)"

Ruth Buss, 06/04/2015

"The Green House on the Hill has a panoramic view over the town and harbour of Napier, a very attractive Art Deco place. Ruth, the friendly hostess, had put a helpful welcoming sign for us by the house which also indicated where we should park. As the name suggests, it is not only painted green but also environmentally friendly. Weather permitting, (which it was) wholesome breakfasts are served on the terrace in the garden. The facilities are clean, modern and comprehensive. There is so much to see in Napier that a minimum of two night’s stay is recommended (see separate recommendations for ‘Hooters’ and ‘The Mission’). David and Ann UK"

Ruth Buss, 06/04/2015

"At the end of an outstanding trip to NZ we thought that we were wowed-out.....but no! The green house on the hill was stunning too. Fabulous views, high amongst the trees, luxurious bathroom and bedroom. Warm and friendly hosts who went above and beyond, even helping us with some washing! Eco friendly products in the house, great breakfasts of cereal, fruit and grain toasts....... Dietary requirements taken care of. Couldn't fault a thing. Thank you (120caz)"

Ruth Buss, 06/04/2015

"The Green House on the Hill was a great way for us to get in shape for trekking! The room was large and comfortable. I particularly liked the soap and lotion in the bathroom. This was my favorite breakfast of our whole trip--scones, toast, cereal, yogurt, beautiful fresh berries, and lots of coffee eaten outdoors on the deck with a great view and birds singing. We walked to the town center for meals and a walking tour of the art deco buildings. Our hosts were very friendly but non-intrusive. They helped us book a very enjoyable wine tour. We had a parking space and entry to our room from the outside. Sarah"

Sarah, 07/04/2014

"A little gem Ruth (hostess) couldn't have been more helpful. Wonderfully comfortable and delicious homemade breakfasts. A great location as well,as the house is high above the town. Be warned, there is a stiff climb up but well worth it and good for the thigh muscles."

S&H (Norfolk), 12/03/2014

"We recently stayed at The Green House on the Hill and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Our room was very well-appointed and a great size. Breakfast - on the deck overlooking the ocean - was a real highlight of our stay. The quality of the breakfast selections was equal to the outstanding view. The B&B is very close to the center of Napier but not right in it, which really appealed to us, as the setting is beautiful. Our hosts were very kind and helpful, and the room itself contained a wealth of suggestions, both from our hosts and from previous guests, that were very helpful. We would highly recommend a stay at The Green House on the Hill!"

good4trave, 17/02/2014

"We loved the green house of the hill as our introduction to napier. Lots of ideas and recommendations from our fabulous host too. Breakfast was delicious, a good nights sleep in a comfy bed. We are sorry we couldn't get a nights accommodation for the mission concert but have recommended the green house already to a friend coming to see us in March. Thank you Ruth for letting me touch base with the UK too.JS"

JS, 17/02/2014

"Lovely place to stay, plentiful breakfast, good standard of accommodation, location confirmed to be in comfortable walking distance of town centre/attractions and B&B run by extremely friendly and welcoming couple who provided abundance of tips and helpful advice on the area."

Martin F, 23/09/2013

"The house and scenery were beautiful, the homemade food was delicious and the company was fantastic. I would definitely stay again and recommend highly to friends! Thank you again for a wonderful stay! RP"

Ruth Buss, 29/08/2013

"I stayed here for two nights. It was such a cute place to stay in Napier. Firstly I was give great directions to find the b&b which were really helpful! I was greeted by a personalised welcome on the blackboard outside! Ruth showed me my gorgeous room and brought me around the upstairs of the house. The room was really nice, perfectly clean and comfy. Bathroom was great. There is a helpful folder of things to do and places of interest. I was on my own before I met my friends and Ruth was really chatty at breakfast and directed me to Hastings Food market and Te Mata Peak, both of which were highlights for me! Really hospitable folk, enjoyed my stay here! Stayed July 2013"

CPL, 08/08/2013

"Ruth was extremely accommodating and kind during our two-night stay. The house, located up on a hill, is a short walk to downtown and to the beach. Our room was very comfortable and breakfasts were delicious -- we especially enjoyed the local, fresh fruit that Ruth always had out. We would definitely choose to stay here again."

Ruth Buss, 02/07/2013

"I had the pleasure of staying in this B&B in Napier while attending a conference. The B&B is amazing, more like having my own little house on the hill - my double room was clean and bright with large windows overlooking the hill side trees and plants, private living room with T.V. and DVD player, coffee making facilities and mini fridge, good sized bathroom - clean and spacious, own private entrance, as well as a large deck area over looking the hill and beach/sea in the close distance. The B&B is in walking distance of shops and Marine Parade where the beach and War Memorial centre is located. Ruth and Jerry were lovely hosts, welcoming, warm, very helpful and knowledgeable about Hawkes Bay. Each morning Ruth was in the kitchen preparing breakfast - choice of cereal, fruit, toast - homemade bread, croissant, jam, with coffee/tea/juice. This B&B is just as good if not better than the hotels. I will definitely be staying here again on my next visit to Napier!"

Louise M, 29/04/2013

"What a lovely place this is. up a steep hill( we took a cab back after dinner for only 6 NZD) there is this hidden gem. Everything was beautiful, you could feel the love of the owners for this place, and with a perfect view, so close to the town and yet very quiet, what you hear are the birds. Breakfast on the terrace, beds were good. A perfect stay."

luzUtrecht, 18/03/2013

"This b&b is excellent. The hosts are really friendly and helpful. The rooms are well appointed and spacious. Nothing is too much trouble. Great patio overlooking bay. Superb breakfast. The property is quite charming, 10 mins from town centre but has to be noted is at the top of a very steep but short approach road. You may need to to drive, but if you are fit you can walk it ok Mikey"

Mikey, 12/03/2013

"We only had two nights in Napier at the Green House on the Hill and wished that we had allowed more time in our schedule. Ruth goes the extra mile to make your stay a happy one, even managing to get us on a wine tour the day after our arrival and making recommendations for restaurants. The breakfasts are very wholesome, served on the terrace with a view of the ocean with fresh baked bread or muffins. Being able to catch up on washing and use good wifi was an added bonus for long term travellers. Rosie"

Rosie, 01/03/2013

"It´s a steep road leading up to this charming B&B surrounded by hugh old trees. But location is perfect providing great views of Napier and the ocean. We had a room on the backside of the house with the convenience of parking the car right in front of it. Ruth is serving exceptional breakfasts on a breakfast veranda with birdseye views- fantastic! We enjoyed our stay a lot! Joseph R"

Joseph r, 01/03/2013

"We usually stay in hotels when traipsing about the place, but stumbled across this bed & breaky with amazing reviews and thought 'why not?'. The personal green touch quite appealed and we weren't disappointed at all. From the moment we arrived until checkout two days later - we felt accommodated and spoilt. The bedroom at the front with ensuite was great and with amenities such as sky, air con & free wifi meant you felt welcomed but not intrusive at a private residence. I particularly loved how close it was to the city centre (5 mins walking - if that) and yet so peaceful and tucked up away from the city in the trees at the same time. Ruth is a wonderful host rustling up an amazing feast each morning with a dazzling array of tea and coffee - again spoilt for choice! We also really enjoyed sharing breakfast with fellow guests and had some great chats over coffee & pastries. Maybe awkward for some but a great way to meet people! We had some time to kill before heading back home and it was no trouble to leave bags there so we were free to mooch unencumbered and when they offered to drop our bags off to us for the bus pick up in town we were blown away! I would absolutely recommend this place to any tourists/travellers (both NZ and non) for a homely away from home stay with all the modern hotel-esque comforts. Roro and Juju. Wellington"

Roro and Juju, 04/01/2013

"Yes, the house is a rich, mossy green so that it’s perfectly tucked away amidst lush foliage on a hill just a short walk from town. It’s also green because it is run in an manner that is ecologically sound. I barely manage to recycle wine bottles and Diet Coke cans and allow myself to think I’ve significantly reduced my carbon footprint, so keeping green isn’t usually a priority when choosing a place to stay. This, however, was a delightful find for any traveler. Of the two guest rooms, we had one with an en suite bathroom. The bathroom was modern, with abundant fluffy, white towels and a European shower with killer water pressure that made us both wistful for the same thing at our house. The bed was firm and comfortable and the room was extremely clean. If that’s what organic inn-keeping is about, I’m all in from now on. Ruth and Jeremy own The Green House and have considered every detail modern travelers need, including free Wi-Fi. Chargers for Apple products are bedside and the drawer under the DVD player is filled with current flicks. Beach towels are provided for anyone making a holiday of it. For me, though, a gorgeous breakfast on the sunny, peaceful deck overlooking the town and the Pacific was the best part of all. The coffee was superb and both pastries and berries couldn’t have been fresher or more delicious. This was a special place that’s worth noting for anyone traveling to Hawkes Bay. It was the perfect spot for us on our whirlwind trip."

E Wood, 21/12/2012

"Ruth and her husband are very welcoming hosts and offer everything for a perfect stay in Napier. Cosy, comfortable rooms just a short walk away from the center of town in a beautiful home where everything is green (organic) and/or fair trade. They were both very eager to help with any information on our stay and the breakfast (on the terrace with beautiful views in summer) is fantastic."

nuuttipukki, 13/12/2012

"We stayed 1 night and really loved the place. Ruth gave very clear driving directions and we found the property easily. Super comfortable bed and covers, very clean bathroom with hairdryer, organic shower gel and shampoo. Upon arrival, Ruth gave us a map on Napier and pointed out the nice restaurants around Napier. The owners are keen green supporters and they even provide a recycle bin in the guest room. Coffee for breakfast is very good and we note that the coffee beans are from organic and fair trade sources. We liked the home made fruit preserves and lemon curd and Ruth wrote down the lemon curd recipe for us. Very nice people and we wished we had stayed longer. Napier has a lot more potential compared to Lake Taupo and we would stay longer in Napier next time. KTW"

KT Wong, 13/12/2012

"My partner and I stayed at the aptly named 'Green House on the Hill' in Napier for two nights. We came from the rather soulless Taupo where we were rained on, generally disappointed and bored. We entered our en suite room and we were greeted by a lovely, warm, clean and thoughtfully decorated interior. The house sits on a hill in Napier but is a 3 minute walk into the centre. The whole place has charm and Ruth ensures each and everyone of her guests are catered for. Delicious breakfast with homemade bread, fresh cheeses, crossaints and preserves awaited us - nothing was too much trouble. It isn't hard to see why this place has such good ratings - an excellent host, a gorgeous house, a picturesque town and a most comfortable bed get my vote! Thank you Ruth - I'll be returning with bells on."

E Bell, 17/11/2012

"Really first class accommodation. Nice people, nice place, nice food, very comfortable beds !,Ideal spot for exploring Napier , help & guidance on where to go,what to see,&where to eat readily given. Our only regret was that we didn't allow for a longer stay as Napier & surrounds have much to see & do. We would definitely want to stay at the Green House on a future visit."

Michael D, 17/11/2012

"lovely couple who run the b and b, made us feel very welcome, Ruth and Jeremy are very friendly, made us feel at home as soon as we got there. We had our own entrance so did not have to disturb Ruth and Jeremy as we came and went. The room had everything you would need, even down a dressing gown and slippers, Ruth produced a great breakfast, with the usual like cereal but best of all there were lots of homemade savory scones, and muffins as well as jams. Would recommend this bed and breakfast for anyone going to Napier"

brewmeone, 13/11/2012

"Staying at the green house on the hill was a very warm experience. The place is very conveniently located to good restaurants, bars, shops and the coastline as well...just 5 min walk to the ocean...the highway runs along the coast. I usually cannot sleep peacefully in hotels/B&B's but The room was very snug and cosy..just like home. I slept peacefully. Had reservations about encroaching on someone's privacy...but you have your very own entrance....there was everything in the room one would need ...like ipod dock...fruit bowl, a small fridge...complete with "the book of recommendations" ...a small notebook containing recommendations and reviews about restaurants and sights from other guests and things to do... Very helpful indeed. My wife usually doesn't like having a very heavy breakfast and doesn't have the usual stuff like cereal, muesli or anything sweet for breakfast. She still raves about the savoury scones Ruth made for her. Lovely breakfast, though we didn't opt for it initially. As they have been around for a long time, they have some great tips/suggestions about the area."

PJT, 30/10/2012

"Thank you for being 'green', for bothering to go the extra distance. Good to know that the laundry is washed in environmentally safe products and the cleaning leaves no nasty chemical smells. Nice touch having Organic Shampoo and Body wash. Pleased you didn't change the towels every day to save washing and great to have the recycle box. Beautiful decor. It was great staying here; also the homemade cookies were 'value added'. Loved waking in the morning to the sound of the Tui and Bellbird and the peace and quiet. Fiona and Ana"

Fiona and Anna, 08/10/2012

"This place is amazing! The breakfasts have such variety each day and Ruth and Jerry are awesome hosts. Around Napier there is so much to do and see. We stayed 2 nights and still haven't seen most of it. the gorgeous parks and lovely buildings are spectacular and i recommend you visit the Art Deco Centre as it had my mum drooling!! As soon as we arrived in napier we fell in love with it and hope to move here soon! Rebekah M (aged 12!)."

Rebekah M, 08/10/2012

"We chose to stay with Ruth, in June, because she had great Tripadvisor reviews and we weren't disappointed. The room was comfortable and well equipped and breakfast was great. The hill is mentioned in the name so it should be no surprise but it certainly is quite a steep climb coming back from the town centre. In exchange though you find yourself only five minutes walk away from the spectacular art deco centre of Napier. Everything is close at hand and Ruth can advise you on the best restaurants. It was Ruth's brilliant suggestion that we divert from our journey south to visit Te Mata peak to the south of Havelock North. Fantastic place with amazing views and we would never have known about it without her advice! Nick R"

Nick R, 28/08/2012

"An excellent place to stay in Napier. The en-suite room was warm and very comfortable with additional welcome touches such as a sofa, table, fridge, biscuits and a good selection of drinks. The wi-fi was free ( unlike some of the hotels I stayed in) and Ruth picked me up from the airport and dropped me off again when I left. She even took us out for a short drive during the stay. The breakfast was delicious, especially the smoothie and it made a refreshing change from the ubiquitous 'cooked breakfast' which you don't always want. If you are car-less you do need to be quite fit as the walk up the hill is fairly challenging, although Ruth would always pick you up from the local restaurants if you needed a lift."

JA, 26/08/2012

"Ruth and Jeremy’s lovely B&B is a home away from home surrounded by nature. Start your day with birds chirping outside your window, then enjoy Ruth’s healthy homemade breakfast, including muesli and baked goodies, homemade yogurt and fresh lemon curd…you’ll see the lemon trees on the property. The Green House on the Hill is aptly named; the end of the walk is indeed steep, but it’s a just a short walk downhill to town. Do take advantage of this B&B’s special perks: Ruth will pick you up/drop you off at the airport or bus stop and there is a laundry room guests can use. Napier’s Arc Deco is Maori style, a fun spot for a relaxed day or two…and Jesters has the best pies in New Zealand!"

Joan, 26/08/2012

"Our hosts Ruth 7 Jeremy were fabulous - more like friends. We had lots of fun and laughter- felt very at home. We will certainly come back to Napier and use this B&B again! We will also recommend it to any friends who are thinking of coming."

"What a fantastic place to stay! We stayed for two nights over labour weekend, and had a ball. The food was good, the rooms were comfortable, Ruth and Jerry are friendly, the place is child friendly. Every effort was made to make us all feel comfortable, and our hosts have excellent local knowledge. Even our very shy 20 month old warmed to Ruth and (especially) Jerry very quickly. We will be back. Paul, Irene, and Raiden"
