Camp Bay Te Pohue Farm Stay Trails
Photos of Camp Bay Te Pohue Farm Stay Trails
Camp Bay(Te Pohue), located in Lyttelton Harbour is steeped in history.
We are the new owners of this very historical property, Te Pohue Farm, is loaded with tales of french occupation, Maori vegetable gardens and brutal conditions of early European settlement.
The farm is 306 hectares, ranges from mainly steep tussock covered native pastures, thick with over-sown clovers to flat hilltops and rolling home paddocks.
The homestead was built in the 1930's and is currently under a plan of upgrades with the bathroom complete and new carpet, we promise no luxurious gold gilded features, but an inviting place to rest the weary travelers mind and body.
The beds are comfortable with down or wool filled duvets, cotton sheets and plush woolen pile under-blankets. The rooms are comfortable and we also hope our guests spend time in the relaxing environment downstairs or out in the open air of the garden, farm or beach.
Things to do while staying with us....
We encourage our guests to use the farm for walks, whether it be for leisure, bird-watching, needless to say the scenery and views will blow you away once you're on top of the farm.
And the beach which is less than 50 meters from the front door, its as golden as the sand gets in Canterbury, most of the time the waves lap in at your feet but it has been known to be a surfie haven from time to time.
Mussels and other crustaceans can be found clutching onto the volcanic debris that the beach bares.
Rock hopping is a great pastime for many visitors to Camp Bay. Fishing can be done from the rocks, we do have some fishing gear you can use but no guarantees!
During the week the beach is often yours alone to enjoy.
To compliment the beach activities, towels are no charge and we do have some kayaks available for hire.
We have an array of horses, if you are an experienced rider we can take you on a tour of the farm, allow the day to really enjoy it and we can pack a lunch for the excursion out to our private accessed beach at Little Port Cooper, just as stunning as camp bay but more remote.
Pets and other farm animals.....
We have 3x wire haired fox Terriers that live with us and go everywhere they think they should, which includes cuddling up in front of the fire or lying in the sun at the back door, they won't chase a ball for you but will happily escort you to the beach or out on a rabbit hunt.
Farm dogs are kept at bay in the yard area. A demonstration of the farm dogs working can be made when we have stock close to the homestead.
Sheep on the farm are usually ranging over the 305 hectares, they are Perendale and we will be crossing them with a Romney ram.
Cattle are run on the farm from time to time and currently we have 28 Stud Angus heifers, 60 angus cows and a bull.
Horses, are varied and usually close to the yard. They are used for work and pleasure, but are most useful on the farm, sometimes packing one with farm equipment for a days work rather than taking the quad bike. We also hunt hares and a good time with the Christchurch Hunt and Brackenfield Hunt during the Autumn and Winter months. Horse experiences and rides on our trails are available to riders whether its on your horse or ours.
Sam's 2x children are away boarding at high school in Timaru and studying at nearby Lincoln University, and stay during some weekends or school holidays, we are also Wwoofer and HelpXchange hosts, where travelers help out with chores in exchange for board.

"What a great location to truly get away from the hassle of city life and experience the genuine hospitality from Sam and Peter at their farm stay Te Pohue. They have a very special location right on the beach front , and their Historic homestead is very comfortatble and just the right enviroment to relax and enjoy the sounds of the waves lapping on the shoreline, to lull us to sleep . It was refreshing to talk about animals and farm life and city living seems very far away, but in fact is only a 45 minute drive to down town Christchurch. They were renovating their bathroom while we were there and this will be another assest and comfort for guests .We enjoyed sitting around in their farm house kitchen having a few drinks and eating homemade pizzas. Altogether a very enjoyable and comfortable stay in a unique enviroment and one we will repeat again very soon."
"Wow. I could not think of a better way to kick off our adventure holiday in New Zealand. The area is magical and well worth the drive, and Sam and his family/friends met us with a warm welcome in that casual style that I love about New Zealand. There were loads of things to do, our favorite of which was to follow the various trails through the tussock-covered hills around the property along ocean-view cliffs amongst free-roaming sheep. The beach is a stone's throw away from the house, which allowed for an invigorating walk before breakfast... which was delicious. We opted to have dinner with the family, which was a great choice - the food was delicious and the company entertaining. The house is lovely, but my 2 sisters and myself chose to sleep in the "sleep out" - a small cottage just behind the main house. The shower and toilet occupy the same building as the "sleep out", but that added to the fun camp feeling of the place. The morning before our departure, we had a tour of the farm, with enlightening explanations of farm operations. Our only regret is that we couldn't spend another night or two. I will definitely return the next time I am in the Christchurch area, and I highly recommend this BnB to anyone looking for a relaxing way to disconnect and reconnect with the land and nature."
"We had a wonderful stay with Sam and Pete. The house, right on the water, offers stunning views and the beach provides the opportunity for relaxation. Sam and Peter were welcoming and charming, and dinner with them was delicious and the conversation entertaining. The bunkhouse was clean, and the beds warm and comfortable. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to have a base to explore the Banks peninsula! Would stay again in a heartbeat."
"we (2+baby) had wonderful 3 days and 4 nights at Sam & Petes farmstay. these guys are true southern originals who gave us a great first impression of the kiwi-lifestyle. we enjoyed the natural beauty as well as the serenity and solitude of the place. Sam & Pete were very welcoming and tried their best to make us feel at home. but make no mistake - this is a real farm and the guys have work to do. don`t expect to be guided around! you have to explore the place by yourself - that`s the beauty of it. we strolled around the huge area of the farm, met the animals and chillaxed at the beach just in front of our doorsteps. (it goes without saying, that the whole banks peninsula is a beautiful area, which is worth to be explored) the food was basic (except for Petes delicious lamb-sausage-dinner) but very good. the bathroom was shared with the hosts and other guests - which made the farmstay-experience even more authentic. ;) Sam & Pete are lovable and interesting people with a great home to share - we can absolutely recommend Camp Bay Farmstay."
"What a pleasure to arrive here for my first trip to NZ! it's like a sanctuary at the end of the world. The location is fantastic! The house is very comfortable, very quite. Sam was such a sweet heart. He was very careful of our needs so we felt home right away. I wish we had more time on our trip to stay longer at Sam's. I can't wait to come back in NZ to come back here."
"Staying with Sam on the farm was great! Had been travelling all day and to pull into the farm with dinner almost on the table was perfect! The bed was very comfortable and with the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach only a stones throw away; was better than any lullaby. Unfortunately had to leave quite early the next morning to catch a flight and Sam's directions were perfect from this little tucked away oasis. Rob, Perth Feb 2015"
