Property Description
Margaret Woodill is the classic Kiwi grandmother and thinks nothing of getting up at 5.30am to cook a full breakfast including homemade bread before your whale-watching or dolphin swimming trip in Kaikoura, New Zealand. She's lived in her Kaikoura peninsula home with its sweeping views of sea and mountains since 1934.
She began taking in passing travellers 27 years ago, just before the whales and dolphins turned the township into a tourist destination. When her four children left home, opening a bed and breakfast seemed a logical use for spare bedrooms and bathrooms.
In her one-acre garden she grows tomatoes to go with the home-laid eggs and breakfast bacon. She bakes bread - without the aid of a bread-maker - and makes sure your dietary needs are met before your whale watching boat sails. This traditional kiwi cooked breakfast includes muesli & cereal, homemade preserves & jam and is available as early as required for whale/dolphin watching guests. Enjoy breakfast in the dining area or out on the sunny deck whilst taking in the magnificent mountain view.
This spacious family home near the Lookout on Scarborough Street, is in a quiet spot only 5 minutes from the Kaikoura township, off the main highway south. The house rests on an acre of colourful garden and there is plenty of off-street parking. A guest lounge, several outdoor seating areas, a laundry and tea & coffee making facilities are available for guest use. There is a solar-heated swimming pool for guests use during warmer months. Margaret will assist you to book local activities and happily meet the bus or train. Milo the big ginger cat is happy to pose for photos!

"We stayed 8 years ago at Bay-view with Margaret and did not consider staying anywhere else but there upon our return to Kiakoura on 1 May this year. It was lovely to meet up with her again and also meet her daughter, Nicky. Both Margaret and Nicky made us feel so at home that we felt that we were just visiting friends instead of staying in a B & B. If you are visiting Kaikoura and you don't stay at Bay-view, then you are missing out on a wonderful accommodation experience."
"We stayed here in February and can't recommend it enough. Margaret is a lovely lady who belies her 80-odd years, baking bread, cooking breakfast, growing vegetables and tending her wonderful, colourful garden. She and Nicky, her daughter who took the booking and advised in advance how to go whale-watching, made us very welcome. The house is above the town, which is reachable either by a walk through the wooded hill or by a short drive. The best restaurant in town is at the same end of town, near a wonderful spot of the coast where the seals laze about. If you're going to Kaikoura, and you should, check to see if Margaret has a room!"
"PERFEKT!!!!!!!!!"
"30 September 2010 What a great place to stay. We almost felt part of the family! Great Kiwi hospitality. We were honoured in being the first users of your brand new bathroom. Peter & Zwanieta Veenstra - Hasselt, the Netherlans"
"What a lovely lady Margaret is. A great NZ welcome with tea and cakes. Margaret has so much knowledge of her town and area and was more than willing to pass this on to help us make the most of our time in Kiakoura. Yes we did do the Dolphin Watch and even managed a swim which was a dream come true. Margaret you have a lovely open heart and this you extend to everyone who is priviledged to stay with you. Thanks also for the tip about the waterfall just north of your home - you were right it was well worth the 5 min walk."
"Margaret is a beautiful and generous lady who makes each of her guests feel special by her genuine interest, warmth and caring. Staying at Bayview is truly like staying in the home of a friend or relative. Our twin room was very comfortable, with every convenience provided; the guest's lounge had a roaring fire with plenty of wood available, although not really needed as we were invited to Margaret's lounge (also lovely and warm) each evening for tea and chat, along with homemade yummies. I highly recommend this B&B to all, and admire Margaret enormously for her energy, love and hospitality."
"Margaret is an amazing lady and an excelent host, showing real interest in her guests. She has a lovely home and garden. Agreat place to enwind on the patio with a few nibbles and a glass of something. Fantastic homemade cake and produce from her garden Judith and Colin Longden South Yorkshire England"
"We have just returned from our holiday in NZ where we spent just one night at Bayview, unfortunately this was not long enough - we should have stayed longer - what a lovely place!! We received a warm welcome from our host Margaret, who very kindly picked us up from the station along with our luggage, and then promptly provided us with a much needed cup of tea and her home made carrot cake - delicious !! Margaret also gave us a lift into town, and then picked us up again later. We spent a comfortable night in her lovely home, and enjoyed a cooked breakfast with her home made bread etc. and then she took us back to the station where we reluctantly said our goodbyes, we wished we could have stayed longer, it is such a relaxing place and the views are to die for. I highly recommend this accommodation to anyone, it's not The Ritz, it's not Raffles, but what it is - is home comfort, peaceful and tranquil, warm and welcoming, and Margaret does everything she can to make your stay enjoyable and memorable - nothing was too much trouble, she even booked our whale watch for us. We were very satisfied with our stay and only wished we could have stayed a bit longer. Betty & Roy Bragger-Sheffield, South Yorkshire Chris & Graham Cutforth- Whitehaven, Cumbria"

"Margaret sets the standard by which all B&B hosts should be evaluated. A friend and I first stayed with her 3 years ago; when my husband and I planned a trip to New Zealand, this B&B was one I knew I would return to. Margaret Woodhill is one of New Zealand's best assets!"

"Set beneath a beautiful garden, Margarets gorgeous house offers warmth and great hospitality. Margaret always fancys a chat and moreover offers the best muesli and bread we ate in NZ. This is no wonder because muesli and bread are homemade by Margaret herself. The lovely rooms are set in a guest wing, which sports a livingroom with fridge, piano and a cosy fireplace that will be lit for you. A great place to stay!"

"I was travelling by myself in August and stopped for one night with Margaret and Nicky. They made me feel so welcome especially as I was their only guest during the quiet season, we chatted for so long in the evening that it was like staying with another member of my family. I will be recommending them to all my friends and family and hope to return myself one day."
