Property Description

Kowhai B&B is not an Airbnb, but a fully-serviced "traditional" B&B, offering you very comfortable accommodation, which is fully wheelchair accessible. Excellent location for Auckland City and Eden Park rugby matches. Your New Zealand host (and her cat Missy) will welcome you to her sunny home, located in a very quiet, secluded neighbourhood, and do whatever she can to help you enjoy your visit to Auckland. Mairangi Bay village is just 10 minutes' walk away, with its shops, cafes, restaurants and safe swimming beach. The surrounding area offers delightful forest and beach walks, as well as the local golf course, just 1/2 kilometre away (visitor green fees $55 for 18 holes). Two bus routes are a few minutes walk away and your host will be happy to drive you to the local bus station for express buses, which take 15 - 20mins to centre of Auckland city. From the same bus station ( 5 mins away) there is FREE return bus transport to Eden Park for rugby match ticket-holders.

Ideally situated for the North Shore Coastal Walk section of Te Araroa - New Zealand's Trail, a back-pack pick-up service can be provided from Devonport (for north-bound walkers) or Long Bay (for those south-bound). For bona fide Te Araroa Trail walkers, I may waive my normal two-night minimum stay.

Breakfast, included in the tariff, comprises multiple choices (including gluten free and dairy free options) of juice, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, toast with honey and preserves, tea and espresso or plunger coffee. All types of dietary requirements will be catered for, with prior notice. Cooked breakfast menu options are offered, at additional cost. Tea, coffee and cold beverages are available at other times.

On-site parking available. Approximate driving times: Auckland International Airport, 35 mins; City centre, 15 mins; QBE Stadium, 10 mins; Massey University, Albany Campus, 10 mins; Bus station for express buses to central Auckland or Eden Park rugby matches, 5 mins; Albany and Takapuna major shopping centres, 10 mins; Millennium Institute of Sport, 5 mins.

The house is very comfortably furnished, with polished wood floors and Turkish rugs throughout. Bedrooms have ample wardrobe and drawer space, independently controllable electric heating and pure cotton bedding. The ground floor Queen bedroom opens out onto a sun deck, which looks onto tree ferns and other large trees. Its generous ensuite bathroom has a large bath with a shower over. The upstairs queen bedroom has windows on two sides, so is always bright, with the large window looking out onto trees. Its bathroom is across the hall and is for the exclusive use of guests occupying the upstairs bedroom. Entry ramps and other equipment mean that disabled guests are welcome, with access to all ground floor facilities.

Internet is available via free WiFi. Guests have use of comfortable lounge, which opens onto sun deck, and are welcome to share TV lounge with your host. During summer months, there is a heated swimming pool, with tiled sun-deck.

Your host will give you an insider's advice on great things to do in the Auckland region, depending on your interests, and also on where to go outside of Auckland, having especially detailed knowledge of Northland (from Auckland to the northern tip of New Zealand).

It is on the walkway which runs the full length of the North Shore coastline that forms part of Te Araroa - NZ's Trail. The adjoining Campbell's Bay area includes Centennial Park, which has walks through regenerating native forest and an 18 hole golf course, where non-members are welcome. The village of Mairangi Bay includes a number of high quality fashion stores and a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and takeaway food establishments, offering cuisine from five different countries, as well as New Zealand. Mairangi Arts Centre (free entry) offers an exciting, varied exhibition programme featuring artwork in a wide range media and styles, by artists primarily from the Auckland region. "We stayed 5 nights in Nov 2017 at Dorothy's and it was simply perfect. She prepares a great and delicious breakfast, the room is beautiful and clean, the bed is very comfortable and the ensuite bathroom has everything one needs. Dorothy is a very very warm host and a great travel guide! All in all a B&B to highly recommend."

"We stayed 3 nights at this very comfortable B & B and couldnt fault the hospitality provided by Dorothy. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom with a lovely deck looking over the very private and peaceful section. The ensuite bathroom was very clean, spacious and warm and provided all the toiletries required for a long weekend. The breakfasts were delicious and included a variety of home made preserves as well as an abundance of fresh fruits, cereals and beverages. We would highly recommend this B & B and feel it is certainly great value for money."

"We stayed here for the first 2 nights of our holiday, 21st and 22nd February 2017. Wonderful two days and a great start to our month in NZ. We had the ground floor room opening out on to the large decking area. Large bathroom with superb amenities/soaps etc. Breakfast was extremely tasty, especially Dorothy's Marmalade and Smoothies. Dorothy made us very very welcome and her Coffee is to die for. Mairangi Bay village is a 10 minute walk with nearby access to coastal walks. Dorothy is also a great travel guide and gave us lots on info for our trip up into the north island. She also played 'taxi' driver and took us to the bus station when we went into Auckland City Center. If we go back to NZ, and I hope we do, Kowhai B&B will be on top of our list of places to stay. Thank you very much Dorothy."

"Hi Dorothy, My partner and I wish to thank you for the wonderful 2 weeks stay at your home. The rooms were clean and very comfortable, with a spacious main en suite. The view from the balcony was both relaxing and beautiful. Your home-made marmalade at the breakfast table was delicious. We will be back. Regards Shaun Elzivor and Mina"

"Our family of four adults spent four nights at this charming and peaceful B&B in January 2014. The rooms are spotless, beautifully furnished and quiet. Dorothy is a gracious and welcoming hostess, who appeared unfazed by our arrival in the early hours of the morning (due to a late flight arrival)! Many thanks for a most enjoyable stay."

Huw & Lesley, 26/01/2014

"This was one of the most enjoyable B&Bs I have ever stayed in. There were 2 of us staying at Kowhai B&B and our hostess , Dorothy, looked after us magnificently. Apart from most comfortable rooms and excellent breakfasts she ferried us to the bus station and collected us late at night after a rugby internation match between SA and NZ. To Dorothy , Howard and Missy (the cat) thank you for a wonderful stay. Louis de Waal Chairman Table Mountain Cableway."

Louis de Waal, 06/11/2013

"My friend and I spent 2 nights at the Kowhai B&B during the PANZ convention early April 2013. The hostess was charming and nothing was too much trouble. She ran us to our destination twice! The breakfast was absolutely superb. Couldn't have wished for better. The room was well appointed and comfortable, we had everything we needed to make our stay most enjoyable. I confidently recommend this B&B as an excellent choice to any guest wishing to stay in the Mairangi Bay area."

Marion Miller, 09/04/2013

"My husband and I only spent one night at this lovely B&B but came away with nothing but good things to say about it. Beautifully presented - picturesque surroundings, waking to the lovely sound of birds from the bushes nearby. Impeccably clean with old fashioned charm. The hosts were warm, friendly and accommodating. Will definitely be back if the need arises."

Kay Karl, 15/02/2012

"I was a single traveller at Kowhai: I enjoyed this roomy B&B which was definitely my idea of a home away from home. It surpassed my expectations on all levels. My very personable host, Dorothy was most hospitable and friendly. This is a centrally located large comfortable home, beautifully furnished, in a quiet area of the North Shore with easy parking available. My room had an adjacent north facing balcony with private urban views. I believe dinner is available on request so Kowhai is more than the usual B&B. I unhesitatingly gave a rating of 10/10 It met all my requirements. For me it was warm, welcoming, comfortable and a quiet neighbourhood."
