Taranaki's most prominent feature is the looming bulk of Mount Taranaki. Bush walking is the thing to do here. Lush rainforest covers the foothills of the mountain and the land changes the higher you go -from dense fain forest to an alpine herb field with some plants unique to the park.
The area around the sunny city of New Plymouth is well-known for its surfing beaches, parks and gardens, particularly the dazzling array of rhododendrons and azaleas on display in spring.
At Wanganui sea birds wheel in from the estuary where the wide Whanganui River, the longest navigable waterway in New Zealand winds its way to the Tasman Sea. Travel on the historic paddle wheeler river boat, with a fascinating commentary on the life of the river as you go.
See the historic Maori settlements along the banks. Experience the 239 rapids, white water raft, kayak, canoe, row, sail, windsurf or jet boat on the river.
Inland a silent brooding prehistoric rain forest provides refuge for wild deer, native birds, flora and fauna.
The Rangitikei river supports an excellent trout fishery. You’ll also find opportunities for bungy jumping, white water and scenic rafting. Golf courses are sprinkled throughout the area - a great way to soak up the scenery and all the fresh air you can handle.
