Sails Ashore is everything discerning guests would expect from a Qualmark 4 Star plus hosted boutique accommodation. Kowhai Lane Lodge is 4 star self catering and available on either a room or whole of house basis. Both are situated within 4 or 5 minutes stroll of the village centre and overlook the harbour. All rooms are fully ensuite and centrally heated. Facilities include an extensive library of books and local interest DVDs to enjoy on lazy evenings. Both are an ideal base from which to explore the magic of Stewart Island.

Hosts Iris and Peter have 79 years combined Island life. Peter was one time Forest Ranger in Charge of Stewart Island and Iris a foundation Trustee of Ulva. Their Sails guided exploration of Ulva Island Open Sanctuary are packaged with Kowhai lane and Sails Ashore and added to the first night tariff. As well we offer "Sails" road tours exploring Island life from days of early Maori up to the present. Tours are run on demand to suit both guests and weather on the day with a maximum party size of 6 per guide. Guests at Sails Ashore & Kowhai Lane enjoy priority on tours and a discount over listed tariffs. We have two Border Terriers and a cat. And although the guest rooms and sun room are a strictly "no cats & dogs" zone our Borders will be delighted to take guests for a walk.
